Plot: Two common criminals get more than they bargained for after kidnapping the wife of a corrupt real-estate developer who shows no interest in paying the $1 million dollar ransom for her safe return. Runtime: 98 mins Release Date: 29 Aug 2014
I thought this movie was a great mix of suspense and comedy! Jennifer Aniston is an amazing actress and she only gets better with age. The whole cast was great, and I don't see why this movie doesn't have more publicity, it should be in all theaters! Jennifer Aniston portrays her character very well, making the movie very enjoyable to watch. Her comedic acting is very creditable, not to mention the emotion she put into her suspenseful performances. If you are looking for a movie that will have you edging on your seat, laughing, and crying all at the same time.. this is a great one to <more>
watch. I just wish I would've been able to see this on the big screen rather than buying it off of iTunes to watch on my laptop. The only option was to rent, so I guess i'll be spending the 22 hours I have left with it wisely! watching it on repeat ! It seems like one of those movies you'll never get tired of and you can turn to it with whatever you are feeling.
a successful movie version of a crime novel (by sillybobsmith)
A really solid movie that really captures the fractured characters and malicious landscapes of Elmore Leonard and even adheres closely to his novel's plot which is related in genre to Leonard's even more offbeat faith healer story Touch, and the movie version of that book, also titled Touch 1997 , has also been generally regarded as really authentic Elmore Leonard. In any case, you don't have to be a fan to appreciate this movie. Yasiin Bey is particularly intense in his performance, even unsettling, doing a solid character study. And Will Forte consistently communicated quite <more>
banal evil. I wound up dropping one point from my rating though for Jennifer Aniston's lack of range which is such a clichéd comment I'm embarrassed to write it.
'LIFE OF CRIME': Four and a Half Stars Out of Five Caper comedy flick based on another Elmore Leonard novel, 1978's 'The Switch'. It tells the story of two inept ex-cons that kidnap the wife of a cheating corrupt real-estate developer; who was planning to divorce his wife and therefore refuses to pay the ransom. The plot is very similar to the 1986 hit comedy film 'RUTHLESS PEOPLE'; which is why a film adaptation, of 'The Switch', was delayed until now. It was directed and written for the screen by Daniel Schechter and stars Jennifer Aniston, John <more>
Hawkes, Mos Def, Tim Robbins, Will Forte, Isla Fisher and Mark Boone Junior. I found it to be really well made and slyly entertaining. Louis Gara Hawkes and Ordell Robbie Def, going by Yasiin Bey in this film are two small-time criminals planning to kidnap the wife of a rich real-estate developer, named Frank Dawson Robbins . Frank is unhappily married to his socialite wife, Mickey Aniston , and has been cheating on her for some time, with a young mistress named Melanie Ralston Fisher . When Frank is gone, for a business trip, the two ex-cons break into Mickey's house and take her. They are disappointed to learn that Frank could care less, if she lives or dies, and doesn't want to give them any money. Forte plays a married friend of Mickey's, named Marshall Taylor, who is desperately trying to have an affair with her.The movie is funny, nicely directed and well cast; each actor is perfectly fitting to their role. As big of a star as Aniston is, I'm still surprised at how talented she is at comedy and it's nice to see her keep taking edgy and cleverly written roles in films like this ; rather than poorly written and clichéd rom-com fluff. I haven't seen any of Schechter's previous work but he brings a really nice, stylized touch to this film. It's not quite as good as 'JACKIE BROWN' or 'GET SHORTY' but it is one of the better Elmore Leonard film adaptations, that I've seen.Watch our movie review show 'MOVIE TALK' at: http://youtu.be/GmFPW994ONg
Great movie: people on here need to get over themselves (by mitchellross-76525)
The amount of bad reviews for this movie shocks me. Saying it's unrealistic or boring. Yes, of course ts unrealistic, just like 90% of other movies; but it's not supposed to be taken seriously. It it neither a serious thriller or a hilarious romantic comedy so don't review it like it's one or the other. It is a lighthearted funny crime movie with twists that often aren't predictable. The acting by all parties is terrific. If you go in not expecting anything but an enjoyable 100 minutes of screen time, then you will love it.

Checked "Life of Crime" in Amsterdam and loved it, as did most of the audience... Unlike many of the reviewers here, who may have gone in expecting something different.Starring Jennifer Aniston, Mos Def and Tim Robbins, "Life of Crime" is NOT a romantic comedy or straight crime story. Rather, it is an Elmore Leonard-derived caper tale set in the late 70s, with the soundtrack and mustaches to match. Staying true to the author's ethos, the dialog is smart, the jokes are hilarious in quite subtle ways, and the storyline gently bends until the protagonists end up in an <more>
entirely different place than they were planning to.Actors usually love doing Leonard scripts - he prefers to let mouths do the talking, not fists - and the cast pretty much nails it here. I loved Mos Def, Isla Fisher and Robbins in particular, but it is Aniston who steals the show. All those years post-Rachel, her comedic timing is still impeccable, and she still has the capacity to get you to care for her, even when cast as a hopeless housewife. The verdict: I thought "Life of Crime" was just as enjoyable as other recent Elmore Leonard adaptations that had way bigger budgets and box office mojo : Tarantino's "Jackie Brown" and Soderbergh's "Out of Sight", and would recommend "Life of Crime" especially to people who loved the latter.
In Life of Crime, unlike many crime thrillers, the focus is on the characters rather than on achievement of maximum possible violence. All of the major characters have their stories and some of them seem to learn from their foolish and sometimes implausible actions. To me, it's refreshing to watch a crime movie in which things continually go wrong as the limitations of the characters are revealed. There's violence, a natural accompaniment to crime, but it's normal violence, not extreme and glamorous solutions to problems of psychotics. And people respond to it in ways that are <more>
sometimes smart and sometimes stupid. This is a genre movie that's far better than most.
This Crime Pays with Laughs and 70's Style (by GeneralUrsus)
Life of Crime is a wonderful, quirky little gem from writer Elmore Leonard who specialized in off-beat characters, fast moving plots and catchy dialogue. The film doesn't feature explosions or car chases but, what it does have are a stable of terrific characters colorfully brought to life by a veteran cast of actors in Tim Robbins, Jennifer Aniston, Mos Def and John Hawkes. Director Daniel Schecter who also adapted the screenplay has done a great job pulling this film together and highlighting all of the wonderful 1970's nuances into a wonderful pastiche. Leonard's novel Switch is a solid adaption and perhaps the best representation of the characters and mood Leonard creates in his books. The action has a methodical pace, but, it is never boring. The plot is simple but, absorbing due to the strong performances by the leads as well as some very comical character turns from Will Forte as a Country Club tennis pro with an interest in Aniston. Mark Boone Junior is both menacing and memorable as a Natzi sympathizer with an armory of guns and rifles at hand's reach. Isla Fisher is terrific as a clever mistress whose machinations just might pay off.The humor is dry and there are several good laughs throughout. Overall Life of Crime is a well-directed, tightly constructed and entertaining caper film that packs some suspense , humor and solid performances into it's compact 90 minute running time.
