I don't review often, but the range in reviews perplexes me. But maybe not. Wes Miller took on a topic in a way that some may call controversial and and in a way that is somewhat commercial. That means there were be many who love it and an equal number that do not. Some people say the film starts strong with the dramatic parts and then somehow devolves when it gets to the action. FAIR. BUT, NOT FAIR. Miller does not wrap things up in a bow and does not try to make people feel good. If you are looking for a movie that's entertaining the action is dope and still makes you think, watch <more>
it. If you want a movie that makes you think everything will be alright if things continue the way they go...then don't. I agree with one reviewer about this:"It's worth mentioning that the marketing of River Runs Red is hugely misleading. The poster shows four men pointing guns - in reality, firefights and action are only a minor part of the film even the action scenes prefer punching ...In addition, the synopses found on IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes suggest the film is an action revenge film, instead of the slow-burn thriller that it actually is. Thankfully, the actual film is far better than these summaries imply.Every aspect of the film works well, from its performances to direction and music. In particular both Taye Diggs and Jennifer Tao as Coleman's wife give moving performances that straddle the fine line between sadness and rage, which helps underline or contrast the troubled system that griefs them. While it'll likely be overshadowed by The Hate U Give, River Runs Red is a hugely important film. The themes it explores, and the way it imparts them, make it a vital albeit austere piece of social commentary. Writer and director Wes Miller is clearly an upcoming film-making powerhouse, with his upcoming IMDb projects showing a dedication to exploring the ongoing social and cultural problems in America."GIVE IT A SHOT!
The Best Movie I've Seen In a Long Time (by jharrahollins)
I loved this movie. Not only was it full action and kept me on my toes, but it also touched my heart. It opened my eyes to what is really going on in society today and hope that one day we make a change. A lot of movies now and days sugar coat everything and don't show you what's really going on but, this movie told something that most people can relate to. This movie told you the truth and made you feel like you were in the movie. This movie deserves 10 stars and is the best movie I've seen in a long time.
EXCELLENT. (by manfourallseasons)
Well acted and Well written. Essential viewing for those remotely concerned about society. But for those who lack empathy and are fuelled by hate, maybe best stick to standard Hollywood fare.
A realistic movie (by sneaguv)
Yes, it's not a Hollywood like movie. No happy ending, no heroes, no fun, no heart-lifting at a time or another, but it's a dark one, about scared cops and bad decisions all around. When seeing it, it's time to think what would be your attitude if something like that I'm talking from everybody's point of view, not only Coleman's would happen to you? You're a cop, scared to death that the stereotypical African-American kid is going to shoot you, do a horrible mistake by shooting him, because you're human, and then try to protect yourself by framing him. What <more>
would you do? Cops should have the strength to face death without fighting? I don't think so. They are as human as you or me. Is it wrong what they've done? Of course. Would you do the same in that situation? I dare to say that the plenty of us would do it. Of course it's immoral. It's human too. Hollywood is about villains and heroes. Fortunately respectively unfortunately, most of us are neither. We are just humans. Was Coleman and his partner right doing what they were doing? Of course not. What would you do if a justice system is just stepping on you without offering a viable alternative for making things right when you know you are right? Again, I don't have an answer but I bet for plenty of us revenge would be more than a simple thought. Yes, there were really bad decisions all around. Unfortunately, human too. I liked the movie, because it made me think a lot.
not typical hollywood action flick (by chrislawuk)
Its fairly uncompromising and gritty which i liked. It highlights institutional racist and social issues but there are no winners at the end of this story. I liked the use of an internationally mixed cast. Its unlikely to spawn sequels unlike many police vigilante movies, I wont go further as I dont want to spoil it. Theres been a number of african american movies coming out on the big screen recently and thats nice to see. It doesnt glorify police violence like your lethal weapon type flick.
Disturbingly true depiction of life now (by paindweller)
This was a well put together film reflecting alot of the harsh truths of the other side that the media refuse to portray & as usual will draw critics and disapproval from the sick & closed minds.
Rated as a "just a movies moves"... Otherwise not bad! (by ScottDWhalen)
Honestly tho it was a good movie! The movie made out as a movie should, but if it was a reality moment this could have been played out WAY better. I mean 1 of them was having a guilty conscious & seemed to have nearly caved in this could have been used to their advantage. What would u have done in the judges shoes? O' & no crap that was George Lopez thought i recognized the voice, but I didn't recognize him.
